Bangladesh, the world’s 8th most populous country, emerged from a period of autocratic rule that lasted from January 2009 to August 2024. Led by an Interim Government of respected intellectuals and activists, the country’s future looks bright as it seeks to restore democracy and respect for human rights and freedom of the press.
But many obstacles remain. The country was looted by the prior regime and its cronies. Transparency International Bangladesh estimates that they stole $12-$15 billion per year for 15 years. Government employees were denied promotions if they weren’t sufficiently loyal to the ruling party. Foreign reserves were low. Positive economic reports had been faked. This speech describes the problems that the interim government inherited.
At this point, Bangladesh can benefit from positive relations with its neighbours and major powers, foreign and domestic investment, and donations targeted at helping the country recover from 15 years being ruled by an autocratic kleptocracy. In particular, support is needed to help the protesters who led in toppling the regime but were martyred or injured. The families of those who were killed require support as do those who suffered serious injuries. To find out how you can assist those who were martyred or injured, click here.
Friends of Bangladesh around the world, including members of the Bangladeshi diaspora, have an important role to play in supporting Bangladesh through this transitional period marked by both significant challenges and immense promise.
Friends of Bangladesh grew out of the Protect Yunus Campaign, which in various forms was active from November 2010 to August 2024. That Campaign was a network of people and organizations that sought to protect the human rights of Nobel laureate Professor Muhammad Yunus and others in Bangladesh. For a brief period, it was known as the Support Yunus Campaign.
